So Shoreham RC hit the road on Friday night for a team bonding and a weekend of camping to find that Dover was cancelled.
Not to be disheartened the club made the most of their weekend and enjoyed shops and Dover Castle before sitting round the campsite toasting marsh mellows and singing old favourite (can you picture it?, best you don’t.)
The Veteran Men kept up their consistent pot winning by taking second place in the 50+ race. The Junior/Senior Men rowed well through the rough to take a deserved third place and the ladies senior pair of Sarah and myself were narrowly overtaken in the home straight to take third place. Ollie and Jim eased their heats in the Novice sculls but were out rowed through the waves to take 4th and 6th.
Crew of the day were the Junior Women. Despite taking third in the four and the pair, they looked solid and
rowed beautifully through the wind and the rain. Much to improve on for Eastbourne and Hastings but thank you to all those who took part and helped throughout the day.
Worthing Regatta kicked of the first race of the season. Still high on the results from Herne Bay Shoreham crews took to the
water .
The Junior women were up first. It was a close race but the crew of Lizzie, Annie, Julia and Patsy kept solid the entire race to secure a well deserved second place.
The Novice men of James, Dan, Mark and Marezk mirrored the success of the ladies with a tight battle with Worthing for a well deserved silver medal just being pipped by Eastbourne. The other Novice crew taking a well improved 6th place. Both crews making an impressive comeback from their results at the Viking Shield.
Another crew capitalising on the success of the Viking Shield and improving their performance was the Junior-Senior men who went from third to second and closing the gap on the leading Bexhill crew.
Making its race debut the mixed U14 Quad sculls was the result of the day, with Harry, Chloe, Dan and James making clear
water between themselves and the Eastbourne and Bexhill Crews and contributing not only valuable points in the Junior league but in the CARA league too!
Other crews who did themselves proud was Vetran 50+ crew and the nail biting ladies novice four race who again were putting
up an impressive fight with Worthing and the winners Deal.
The race of the day went to Oliver Lees in the Mens Novice Sculls. The whole beach was on stanby (including the safety boat) for Ollies’ late entry in the scull. For those of you not around last year, Saturday just brought relief that Ollie managed to stay in the boat and finish the race. He proudly proved that last year was behind him and took first place in front of the two Bexhill scullers.
All in all a positive start to the season ahead. Lets continue the hard work and push Worthing hard to take second place in the CARA league!
Thanks to all competitors and supporters for making the first regatta so enjoyable.
See you all at Dover and Folkestone for the double weekend 4th and 5th June.
